Thanksgiving Is Around the Corner: Is Your Home Ready for the Holidays?
The Holidays are Coming Fast! Is Your Home Ready?

Thanksgiving lands on November 26 this year, which means we’re about five weeks out. If that made your stomach flip a little, you’re in good company. The good news is that five weeks is plenty of time to get your home holiday-ready without a last-minute scramble.
As a designer, I always tell homeowners the same thing: the holidays are the ultimate stress test for your space. Suddenly you have extra people, extra food, and extra everything. A home that works beautifully on a quiet Tuesday can feel cramped and chaotic when twelve relatives show up. So let’s walk through it room by room.
Start at the Front Door
Your entry sets the tone before anyone steps inside. Take a hard look at it. Is the porch light working? Is there a spot for coats, bags, and shoes? Even a simple bench with a few sturdy hooks can keep a pile of jackets from taking over your living room. Add a seasonal wreath or a pot of mums, and you’ve got a warm welcome with very little effort.
Do a Real Seating Check
Here’s a question I love asking clients: Where is everyone going to sit?
Count your seats, including dining chairs, sofas, ottomans, and benches. If you’re short, a pair of upholstered stools or a bench that tucks under the table can be a lifesaver, and they look intentional rather than like an afterthought. If your dining table is tight, now is the time to consider whether a leaf, a larger table, or a slightly rearranged layout could help. Guests should be able to pull out a chair and move around without playing Tetris.
Look at Your Flow
Think about how people will actually move through your home. The kitchen is where everyone gravitates, so make sure there’s a clear path and a place for guests to linger without being in the cook’s way. A kitchen island or a nearby console can become a natural spot for drinks and appetizers, which pulls the crowd out of the work zone.
If your layout feels bottlenecked, you don’t need a full remodel to fix it. Sometimes moving a chair or clearing a countertop makes all the difference. But if you’ve been dreaming of opening up that wall or updating a dated kitchen, this is a good time to start planning, because the holidays have a way of showing us exactly what isn’t working.
Take Advantage of Our Weather
One of the best things about living in Southern California is that late November is often still patio-friendly. If you have an outdoor space, use it. A few string lights, some cozy throws, and a fire pit or patio heater can turn your backyard into extra entertaining room, which is a huge help when the inside gets crowded. Just give your outdoor furniture a good once-over now, and make sure everything is clean, sturdy, and ready for guests.
Check the Practical Stuff
The unglamorous details matter more than anything else:
- Lighting: Replace burnt-out bulbs and consider dimmers for the dining area. Warm light makes everything, and everyone, look better.
- Guest bathroom: Fresh towels, a good hand soap, and an extra roll of toilet paper within reach. Small touches go a long way.
- Storage: Clear out a spot for coats, extra dishes, and serving pieces so your counters aren’t buried.
- Appliances and systems: Test your oven, dishwasher, and garbage disposal before the big day, not during it. If something’s acting up, schedule the repair now, since professionals book up fast in November.
Decorate With Restraint
You don’t need to buy a truckload of decor. Pick a simple palette, such as warm neutrals, deep greens, rust, and a touch of gold, and layer in natural textures like wood, linen, and wool. A low centerpiece lets guests see each other across the table, and a few candles add instant ambiance. Less really is more here.
Make a Short List Now
Walk through your home this weekend with a notebook. Note what needs fixing, what needs replacing, and what you simply wish worked better. Then sort it into three piles: things you can do this weekend, things that need a pro, and things to plan for after the holidays.
Thanksgiving is really about gathering the people you love, and a home that’s ready for them makes the whole day feel easier. If your walkthrough reveals bigger projects, like a kitchen that’s too small or a layout that fights you at every turn, that’s not a failure. It’s useful information for your next chapter.
Here’s to a warm, welcoming, stress-free holiday season!
